I am Professor of International Relations in the Department of Politics and International Relations, University of Sheffield, UK. I previously worked at the Universities of Sussex (2005-20), Aberystwyth (2002-05) and Lancaster (1999-2002).

My research centres on issues of political ecology and ‘environmental security’ (especially in relation to climate, water and energy), though also engages with issues and themes in International Relations theory; war and peace; and Middle East politics. My latest book (co-authored with Gabrielle Daoust and Clemens Hoffmann) is Divided Environments: An International Political Ecology of Climate Change, Water and Security (Cambridge University Press, 2022) publisher page here and contents and excerpts here, which cuts across all of these themes.

This site collects most of my published writing, including PDFs for academic journal articles and book chapters, links for media and blog pieces, and some conference and other contributions. It also provides information about my books and current teaching, and some unpublished blog notes. It is organised around the main areas of my research (though I have not included a separate ‘Middle East politics’ tab given that this cuts across most of the other areas).

I am intermittently on twitter at @jan_selby.

I can be contacted by email at j.e.selby@sheffield.ac.uk.
